Edmonton Oilers: Ales Hemsky Speaks Up About Tom Renney's Departure

On Friday, reporters of TSN broadcasting the World Hockey Championships tournament caught up with Edmonton Oilers veteran scorer Ales Hemsky about his thoughts on the team's recent decision to not bring back head coach Tom Renney for another season.

Hemsky said, "I just heard [about the news] yesterday. He was a great guy and good coach too. I never had a problem with him and it's kind of disappointing, but it's kind of how things go in hockey. I wish him all the best, and hopefully I will see him again."

Hemsky is coming off one of his worst NHL campaigns in his career, with just 10 goals and 26 assists on the year. He sounded disappointed that his team did not perform well enough, which likely played a big role on the decision to change coaches.

"I think we had a better team than we played. We showed it in the last month and a half or two months. We got healthier and we played better, so I don't know what will happen next season when they change the coach," admitted Hemsky.

Hemsky continued on to talk about his upcoming summer after the tournament. He said, "I will go home. Last couple of years, I injured my shoulder and spent the majority of the time in Edmonton. This summer, I'll just be home, try to relax, start training and get ready for next season."

It sounds like GM Steve Tambellini made the coaching decision based on the poor performances that the Edmonton Oilers showed in the last three seasons under his reign. There probably is a lot more pressure from ownership to see some progress in the NHL standings after three years of bottom feeding.

With the third head coach waiting to be hired in Tambellini's tenure in Edmonton, Tambellini could be next on the chopping block if the Oilers do not turn around their performance on the ice.

This is Joseph Trenton reporting on the Edmonton Oilers.

Other recent articles you may have missed

1. Implications of Oilers Decision to Fire Renney

2. What does the future hold for 7 Canadian teams at the Draft

3. Giving the Montréal Canadiens a management report card

Read more NHL news on BleacherReport.com

Barons Back to Even With 5-1 Win

After being blanked by the Toronto Marlies in game 1 of the AHL Western conference finals Thursday night, the Oklahoma City Barons have battled back to take game two 5-1 evening up the series.

With the Oilers? season long gone, EdmontonOilers.com staff have journeyed to Oklahoma City and Ryan Dittrick reports on the game:
The Oklahoma City Barons needed a quicker start than they had in Game 1. They got it.

They needed their power-play to answer the Marlies? AHL-best PK, which went 6-for-6 Thursday night in a 5-0 win. They got that, too.

They needed to battle, compete and show up at puck drop. No complaints here, either, as goals by Mark Arcobello and Teemu Hartikainen in the opening 20 spurred the home side to a dominant 5-1 win over the Toronto Marlies in Game 2 of the AHL?s Western Conference Final at the Cox Convention Center in OKC.

Oil Kings skate away with 4-3 win

Press Release

SHAWINIGAN, Friday, May 18, 2012 - Four different Oil Kings registered a goal as Edmonton went on to defeat the hometown Cataractes and take game one of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament.

The Oil Kings were the first to get on the board at 2:41. Kristians Pelss accepted a gorgeous pass from Michael St. Croix in the crease and tapped it past Alex Dubeau.

Edmonton inherited two consecutive minor penalties on roughing calls and the fan favourites capitalized. Michael Chaput pounced on a juicy rebound in the slot and shot the puck past Laurent Brossoit. Brandon Gormley was awarded an assist on the goal.

Things tightened up in the second frame with only four shots on goal being registered in the first half of the period. The score stayed tied at one heading into the third.

With only 61 seconds gone by in the third period Griffin Reinhart put the Oil Kings up by a goal with a shot that found the top-right corner of the net. Martin Gernat doubled Edmonton?s lead with his first goal of the tournament at 5:40.

To the delight of the hometown crowd the Cataractes cut the lead just a few minutes later. Anton Zlobin managed poke the puck past the goal line just as the whistle was blown. Michael Chaput tied the score at three with fewer than seven minutes remaining in the period, but the lead was very short-lived as Henrik Samuelsson put the Oil Kings back up by profiting from a costly Cataractes turnover and one-timing a shot in the net.

Head coach Éric Veilleux pulled his goaltender with approximately 90 seconds to play in the game. Despite a few great opportunities, the Cataractes were unable to pull even with the Oil Kings.Griffin Reinhart was named the first star of the game.

Game two of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup goes tomorrow as the defending national champions Saint John Sea Dogs take on the OHL champions London Knights. Fans can catch the game live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports starting at 7 pm ET.
